3-2-1 TUESDAYS WITH MS NIV

Issue #129, 27th December 2022

It has been a very busy year and I am looking forward to another busy one. I like high octave, high activity, high output, high engagement… for I always think carpe diem, seize the day. However, the end of the year is a good time to put a halt on all that and do some self-reflection. After all, it is quite the practice for educators to plan their lesson, go through executing the lesson plan as diligently as possible, include deviations, and at the end of the unit, jot down their reflections as a feed-forward.

Here are 5 questions that I am reflecting on. What are yours?

  1. What made me happy or miserable this year?

2. What were some of the best or worst moments of this year?

3. Which of my current habits will help me in short-medium-long term goals?

4. Which relationships helped me become a better version of myself?

5. What will I do less/more next year?

Happy New Year dear readers. Looking forward to learning-teaching with each of you in 2023. You can participate in my learning journey by subscribing to this free newsletter with your email.

Two Thoughts of the Week

“A prudent question is one-half of wisdom,” says Francis Bacon.

“A man must find time for himself. Time is what we spend our lives with. If we are not careful we find others spending it for us. . . . It is necessary now and then for a man to go away by himself and experience loneliness; to sit on a rock in the forest and to ask of himself, ‘Who am I, and where have I been, and where am I going?’ . . . If one is not careful, one allows diversions to take up one’s time—the stuff of life.”
― Carl Sandburg

Maria sees her secret to improvement and success as being reflective. Although self-reflection requires patience and introspection and is sometimes uncomfortable, it can be productive and serve as a concrete way of attaining one’s full potential. Maria is a grade eleven student in her first year of the IB DP program. Originally from Russia, Maria grew up in Tashkent, but moves periodically between Virginia, USA and Tashkent. She identifies as an ethnic Russian-Korean, part of the group of Koreans that were resettled in Central Asia during the 1920’s-30s.

She loves to golf, read fantasy fiction novels, and watch anime. In her free time, she likes to sleep, and write her own fiction stories. As a teenager, suddenly, on the brink of being thrown into a world of adulthood and leaving home, she recognizes the simultaneously scary and anxious experience for both herself and her friends. For that reason, she finds one of the best ways of coping with and facing new challenges to be the small quiet, contemplative moments of momentary self-reflection on long car rides, and solitary golf games. She hopes to share her passion for the limitless possibilities of continuous improvement through self-reflection with her friends and audience.

Issue #127, 13th December 2022

What is your life’s purpose?

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do?
  • Who do you do it for?
  • What do these people want and need?
  • How does their life change as a result?

I asked myself these 5 questions this weekend, to summarise my year, my work, and my purpose – I am an education advisor to schools and higher education institutions so that they can become more enriched, engaged, and happy teaching-learning communities.

It is the end of the year and a great time to reflect on your life’s purpose dear educators and parents, school administrators, and owners of educational institutions. Go ahead, you can ask yourself these questions to have a better understanding of your life and work’s purpose. I am sharing here a few tips for summarising your year’s story as well. While we all teach our students how to summarise stories and literary or scientific texts, it is also a learned skill to be able to summarise our day, our month, and our year… a good tool to be able to reflect upon and move with purpose towards the next story, next year, creating more meaningful lives for ourselves and helping those around us to be more purposeful and intentional.

“A simple summary of my life is that my parents worked very hard so that I could have a great education, and I took that education and worked very hard to get where I am. I would like my kids’ lives to be exactly the same. ” Guy Kawasaki

Issue #126, 6th December 2022

Are we too close? or are we too far apart? I am talking about intimacy and understanding personal space. What do we understand about it as adults? how can we help our students and children learn and understand it? After the past couple of years of social distancing, a deluge of screen time with age-inappropriate material, an understanding of personal space has got muddled, and with it the understanding of intimacy. The intimacy that heals. The intimacy that is thrust upon. Personal spaces that are too far apart. Personal spaces that are invaded. It is the last month of this year, reasonable time to have a chat with your family? a discussion with your students? What does intimacy mean to you? It is an option to know what we want. How much intimacy do we want? With who all we want intimacy and of what kind. We have different needs for different people at different moments. It is a good time as any to discuss and understand. Say yes to what you want and no to everything else.

Two Thoughts of the Week

“Those who have never known the deep intimacy and the intense companionship of mutual love have missed the best thing that life has to give. ” Bertrand Russell

“Intimacy is healing.” Dean Ornish

One Video of the Week

Most people equate intimacy with sex but there is a whole range of possibilities that can bring us fulfillment. And while there are many tools for personal growth that help us to be healthier or more productive, we often lack the means to specify the level of intimacy we want. Wilrieke designed her cuddle workshops to teach people how to understand their needs and boundaries so that they become more comfortable with intimacy. Wilrieke’s talk will reveal the empowerment, confidence, and happiness we stand to gain when we design our own ways of being intimate. Wilrieke Sophia was born in the Netherlands and studied Forestry and Nature Conservation. While running her own herbs and spices company, she began developing her idea of Cuddle Workshops for teaching and facilitating personal growth through intimacy. Wilrieke is well-known in Europe with a fast-growing demand for her seminars and speaker appearances.

There is good stress and there is bad stress. What makes it good or bad? Does the source of stress make it good/bad or do we make it in our minds? or both? How do we recognize anxiety and how do we handle it? Can we teach ourselves, our children, and our students how to work through stress?

Here are some thoughts, try them out and share what worked and what did not work for you. You can post your comments on the blog post. Go ahead and subscribe if you have not yet and enjoy my learning journey every week.

One thing was clear: To give our kids the kind of education they deserved, we had to first agree that rigor mattered most of all; that school existed to help kids learn to think, to work hard, and yes, to fail. That was the core consensus that made everything else possible. — Amanda Ripley

What does it mean to be accountable? is it being responsible? is it to not make excuses? is it to accept one’s role in an activity? is it to ensure self-governance? is it to be aware of the consequences of one’s words and actions? What does it mean to you as a teacher, as a student, and as a parent? Can we learn/teach/role model it? How can you address the elephant in the room and have accountability conversations with yourself and with those whom you care for?

“Accountability means to say what you do, and do what you say”.

“The best kind of accountability on a team is peer-to-peer. Peer pressure is more efficient and effective than going to the leader, anonymously complaining, and having them stop what they are doing to intervene.” –  Patrick Lencioni.

Could a conversation change the fate of an individual, a family, organisations, or whole countries facing failure, underperformance, and disappointment? In this talk, Tafadzwa Bete Sasa shares two questions and a skill that can transform accountability conversations from awkward exchanges about elephants in the room to acts of love that help our loved ones, colleagues, and leaders improve and do better.
